Volvo V70 - "Engine System Service" message

I have a 2006 Volvo V70 2.4 diesel and two weeks ago an "Engine System Service required" message appeared along with the yellow warning. I booked the car into a local garage but before it went in the message disappeared and no message was stored the garage said they probably wont be able to find any errors on the diagnostics and to bring it in if the message re-appeared.

Well it has but this time it reads "engine system service urgent" and the triangle is red. Can you enlighten me as to what "systems" are included in this message; ie emissions, fuel, turbo? or what common faults associated with this message?

Probably gummed up. EGR choked with tar. DPF choked with soot. Or DPF choked with ash. An independent might be able to clean out the EGR. After that, I suggest running it exclusively on Shell V-Power Nitro Plus diesel because that helps to clean up engine fuel systems as well as giving more power and torque and better fuel economy if you use the increased torque to upshift earlier. (An autobox will do this automatically at lighter throttle openings.)
