Off-gassing within new car. Toyota Auris Hybrid.

Hello John,
I wonder if you can offer any advice regarding off-gassing of chemicals within a new car. I bought a new car in September 2015 which had a strong "new car smell" and during our first significant journey both my wife and I felt unwell. We have subsequently been unable to travel more than 10 miles in this car without getting stinging eyes, tight chest, burning throat and other symptoms which persist for several days. Despite ventilating the car at every opportunity, there is still a problem. The garage initially gave the car a "deep clean" but are unable to help further, They claim that neither they nor the manufacturer can find any fault so the problem is with us not with the car.
Many thanks,
Ivan.

If a car has been sitting in strong sunlight, the general advice is to open the windows and switch the ventilation to recirculate before turning on the airconditioning and that disperses anything the has come off the interior plastics. In rare cases people can prove to be allergic to smells in cars and certain types of vibration. But very important to make sure no CO is getting into the car and that can be checked with a CO detector. Because this is a hybrid, there may be a fault with the battery system or its ventilation. Another reader tells us: "I had the same experience with a leather recliner, which I took delivery of whilst recuperating from a bad dose of flu. A month later I was still no better until after an Internet search I realised it could be the chair. The chair was moved to the garage and within 48 hours I was well, returning the chair to the living room caused a return to sore eyes and severe nausea. Clearly this proved the issue - probably chemicals used in the leather tanning process. Some people are very sensitive to these."
