Suggestions for a new SUV?

My son and his wife (with one child) need a replacement family car, either an estate or an SUV style. They would prefer to buy rather than lease and I have offered to provide funds up to £10k.The first question is - which is the best way to purchase i.e. cash or would a lease get them a better " new" deal such as the Mazda CX-5 and secondly - with the above budget what would you recommend as a suitable family vehicle - they have looked at Nissan Qashqai , BMW 320 and Golf estates.

Plenty of used first generation Qashqai around, though they have a few problem areas and the 1.6 petrol engine version is best avoided. Most BMW 320 Tourings are diesel and the N47 diesel engine has a timing chain issue. £10k Golf diesels are subject to the NOx recall and the 1.6 diesel is best avoided. A Honda CR-V is probably a good idea: Spacious, part-time 4WD and 40mpg economical. The other way (for a new car) is a PCP which involves a deposit and monthly payments for 3 years, then either walk away or pay a pre-determined amount to keep the car.
