Which oil should I use in my Volkswagen Polo to reduce start-up noise?

I have a W-reg Volkswagen Polo 1.4-litre automatic with 60,000 miles. Since I've owed it, I've been using 10w 40 semi synthetic oil (as recommended). It's now time to change the oil again and I've been looking at various oil makers' websites for recommendations. I'm getting a a vast array of recommended grades of oil, from 5w30 fully synthetic, 15w40 to 15w50 and of course 10w40 semi synth and now I'm confused. The car is now 10 years old, and because of that, and probably poor maintenance prior to me owning it, the engine can be noisy on start-up (until it is warm). So I thought I'd try a suitable oil of a different viscosity but have no idea which one is compatible. Any suggestions or advice to reduce engine wear and noise?
