MINI Cooper gearbox failure - should the dealer pay for repairs?

Five months ago I bought a 2003 MINI Cooper from a dealer. The car was sold with 12 months warranty and last week the gearbox failed. The dealer isn't interested in paying for the repairs and says it's down to me because the car is 12 years old. Do I have to pay for the gearbox or is it down to dealer?

You could invoke: www.honestjohn.co.uk/faq/consumer-rights/ But this was a cheap old car, 12 years old and though the gearbox failed within six months I think a wise Small Claims would rule in favour of the dealer or might demand partial contribution from him, part from new. A new transmission costs more than the car is worth.
