Which wheels are less susceptible to pothole damage?

The wheels and tyres on my W204 Mercedes C250 seem particularly susceptible to pothole damage - I'm on my third near side rim already!

The wheels are 18-inch with 225/40 tyres on the front and 255/35 on the rear. Would a switch to 17-inch wheels give greater resilience to such damage? What tyres would you recommend at this size?

Definitely. The tyre size for 17s is probably 235/50 R17. Better still on 16-inch wheels with 215/60 R16 tyres. You can get high quality, guaranteed, painted Alutec alloys from www.tyremen.co.uk for about £350 inc VAT, plus, of course, the cost of the tyres.

Obviously with same size tyres front and rear the car will be more prone to oversteer and the steering angle sensor and ESC might be affected. But the change is more likely to increase the towing limit rather than reduce it.
