Audi A3 gearbox problem

I've owned a 2009 Audi A3 from new. It has been serviced by Audi every year and has never given me any problems, with 47,000 miles on the clock. Recently it developed a horrible grating noise.

I took it to the Audi dealer who have said that there is a problem with the manual gearbox. They don't know why it has happened and it will have to be replaced costing £4000. They have agreed to pay 50 per cent of the cost. Do you think this is reasonable or should they be contributing more of the cost?

That's prompt and generous goodwill for a six year old car. The dilemma is that it might be possible to have the job done independently for less than £2000, though I can't say that for sure on the detail you have provided. Less hassle to go with the Audi solution.
