Car rental firm has charged me for broken light - do I have to pay?

I hired a SEAT Alhambra last week from a national rental company. After returning it, I got a bill for £250 for a damaged fog light, which I knew nothing about. Is there any recourse I can take to get my money back?

No, because if you "knew nothing about it" you did not check the car before you drove it away and you do not actually know whether the foglight was damaged by a flying stone of something when the car was in your possession or not. You must always go over the car carefully with the rep and with the damage sheet before you drive it away.
