Tax disc holder is stuck - how do I remove it?

How do I remove the redundant tax disc holder from my car? It was there when I bought it in 2009 and seems to be very firmly attached by the adhesive pads.

Very gently heat the screen of the tax disc holder with a hairdryer to melt the glue, but be acutely aware that if you overheat the screen it could explode. My advice is to forget about removing it.
