Can you recommend an SUV that's cheap to run?

I am looking for the most economical 4x4 to tow a trailer with two horses. It must be automatic, low tax and cheap to insure. Any ideas?

These requirements are extremely conflicting. Nothing will do the job you want that is automatic, low tax and low insurance bracket. Not many automatic SUVs are even rated to tow 2,200kg. You're looking at something like a Range Rover Sport, Discovery, VW Touareg, etc., all big 4x4 SUVs with engines of at least 3.0 litres. You could consider a pick-up truck, but auto will destroy its economy. The best, most reliable pick-up is the Isuzu Rodeo/D-Max.
