What's wrong with my Citroen Xsara Picasso?

I was driving my Citroen Xsara Picasso yesterday when I felt a sudden "thump". The engine then cut out and the car coasted to a stop. It now won't start. Any ideas?

Reads like the timing belt snapped. Have a look under the plastic cover over the left end of the engine as you face it.
