Why have I been given penalty points for a parking offence?

I was parked outside a local shop and the back end of my car was over the zig zag markings of a traffic light area. As a result, I was given a ticket for three penalty points and a £100 fine. I am in my first two years of holding my licence and would like to avoid having points added for such a trivial matter.

A friend has told me not to pay, as this is admitting the offence. I have also been told that the ticket has an expiry period of six month then it is void. Should I ignore it or pay?

If you take this to court you might get five points, so don't do that. If you don't pay the fine you'll be in even deeper trouble. Pay the fine, and be more careful in future. You also have to disclose the penalty to your insurer.
