Do you have to fit snow chains to the front and rear wheels?

We are planning to drive to an Austrian ski resort in the next couple of weeks in our Skoda Yeti 4x4. We want to take snow chains and wondered if we should buy them to fit both the front and rear wheels or would chains on the front wheels only be sufficient?

Fitting them to only one axle may confuse the 4x4 system. Thule chains seem to be very good. Obviously better to go on cold weather tyres than to have to muck about at minus 20C fitting chains. Also do what the Austrians do and leave your wipers sticking up at night so they don't freeze to the screen.
