Local garage has damaged my car - what are my rights?

I took my 2006 Ford Focus into a local garage to change two tyres. However, when I collected the car I found that the gear stick had shifted to the right. As a result, reverse was where 1st was, 1st and 2nd had moved to where 3rd and 4th was, while 3rd and 4th were where 5th and 6th was. I obviously can't get into 5th and 6th as the gear stick won't go any further.

The garage is claiming it's a coincidence, but I have never had any trouble before and the problem started when I collected my car. Do you know what the problem could be and how it could have occurred?

This is probably the result of the way they jacked the car up. Either the engine/transmission has moved, or they crushed part of the gearshift mechanism with their jack. It isn't coincidence. But if the engine/transmission mountings have failed when the car was up on a four point hoist then they were failing anyway, and that would be down to you.
