Are rear-wheel drive cars rubbish in the winter?

We're looking at buying a newish (2-3yr old) sporty car and we've been looking at BMW 1 Series, specifically the 116 or 118. All good so far however given that BMWs are all rear wheel drive my wife is concerned that this car will be rubbish in the winter.

My friends disagree and say it will be fine, so long as you don't drive hard in the winter months. Is this true?

To make it grip in snow you have to switch the Traction Control system off, otherwise nothing will happen. But the answer is to avoid silly low profile tyres and to fit all weather or winter tyres in winter. Then they are as good as anything else.
