Is the Skoda Fabia susceptible to transmission failure?

Is there a know problem with the gearbox fitted to the Skoda Fabia Mk1, 1.2 petrol engine? Mine has failed after only 60,000 mile and I've been quoted £2000 to fit a new 'box. Surely this cannot be acceptable, but Skoda are not at all concerned or surprised.

The transmission in this class of VAG car: Polo, Ibiza, Fabia was always variable. Some last well. Some don't.
