Why is my Toyota Corolla burning oil?

I have a Toyota Corolla (year 2000 model) and it is burning too much oil after every 1500 miles. Is the engine ruined or is it a simple fix?
It will either be the piston rings or the valve stem oil seals. Rings aren't worth the huge expense of fixing. Valve stem oil seals would be about £300. Or you could try one of the STP treatments that might help, but can't be guaranteed to.
