Are automatics suitable for towing a caravan?

I am about to replace my Volkswagen Passat with a newer model and am considering an automatic. I tow a small caravan for 3/4 weeks a year and am wondering if an automatic will be suitable or would a manual be better?

The Passat DSG just won a caravan towing award. But of course, this was just in a one off test. it did not test the longevity of the transmission when towing. Generally, an old fashioned torque converter automatic transmission is good for towing because the slip enables a smoother take-off than a manual with a clutch.
