Dealer has delayed the delivery of my new car - am I entitled compensation?

I ordered a new car a few months ago, but didn't arrive on the agreed delivery date. The dealer has told me there is a 'delay' and has no more information. What are my rights? Do terms and conditions override statutory rights regarding compensation for non-delivery? The car is needed car for a specific date and purpose and the dealer is aware of this.

There are no 'statutory rights' for non delivery of a new car on a given date. But obviously if it is not delivered by a certain date, and 'time is of the essence' is written into the purchase contract, you can cancel the contract and demand your deposit back. What you cannot do is force the dealer to somehow spirit a car that is on a ship half way across the Indian Ocean to you immediately.
