Jaguar XF - what's the best wheel size?

I have just bought a new Jaguar XF 3.0D (lovely car) on 17-inch wheels using your rule of thumb that the smaller the wheel the better the ride. I am concerned to find (too late) that on a previous thread you described the combination as dangerous. Why so? And would I be better to buy 18-inch wheels and use the 17s for winter tyres?

Slight misinterpretation. A 3.0D 240 should be okay on standard 17s. But a 275 probably needs 18s.
