Diff failure after 4 years - should I sue?

I have owned a 2010 Nissan X-Trail 2.0 diesel from new. I purchased it from a Nissan dealership in Derby and serviced in accordance with the service schedule by a Nissan dealership in Kent. Two weeks ago the car broke down and had to be recovered.

The garage diagnosed the rear diff had gone and was caused by a manufacturing defect. Nissan have offered £500 towards the cost of repair, but the part alone is £3000 and I feel totally let down. The part should outlive the car especially as it has only done 55,000 miles. What can I do?

You could attempt to apply 'sale of goods' against the supplying dealer on the basis that you can 'reasonably expect' a diff to last longer than four years and 55,000 miles but I can't guarantee that you will get anywhere.
