Buying a used estate for £10k - what should I get?

I have £10,000 to spend on a replacement car. It should be an automatic estate with a petrol engine as I only do around 5000 miles per year. I want to keep the car for a long time, maybe 10 years so looking to buy something with mileage under say 60,000. I like the BMW 3 Series and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, what can you recommend?

The Mercedes 4 cylinder engine is supercharged. But it has had fewer problems than the 4 cylinder BMW. if you go for a BMW make sure it is a 6 cylinder model. For more details see the entries for the cars and the concurrent saloons in www.honestjohn/co.uk/carbycar
