My Ford C-Max's clutch needs replacing at just 24,000 miles - is this to be expected?

After having a foul smell appear in my '08 1.8 diesel C-Max I have taken it to a Ford dealer for inspection. I have learnt tonight that it may be the clutch. It has only done 24,000 miles and is not used as a run around. Many C-Max owners have told me that clutch is the same as in the Focus and is not up to the job. Can you help? The car is still under warranty, but if they use the wear and tear excuse they want £800?

This isn't an unheard of problem on the C-Max but it's not overly common either. We haven't heard from anyone who has experienced anything like this before: www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/ford/c-max-2003?sect...d

It's worth contacting Ford customer services to explain the situation but they're likely to say that 24,000 miles isn't unheard of for replacing a clutch. However, the car is only two years old and if it's not used as a runaround the clutch should last much longer. Push them to pay for the repair or at least contribute towards the cost.
