Buying a family car - Audi A6 or Volvo XC60?

Having had Volkswagens and Audis before, we are looking to change our Ford S-Max for something a little more rewarding to drive with a good solid feel. It’s been a good car, great for space and with kids and a fairly comfy ride, but I would like something we would both look forward to drive.

We like the look of the Audi A6 or the Volvo XC60 and would like your advice on which is the best from an MPG, servicing costs and running point of view?

I took a new XC60 2WD out for a drive through the High Peaks a couple of weeks ago. It had Volvo's own very latest D4 181PS 2.0 diesel engine. That particular car had a faulty manual gearshift (the cables had stretched), but I still managed a pleasant 40 miles in it. Obviously doesn't handle as well as something lower, of course. But okay.
