Can I improve the ride comfort in our Ford Mondeo?

The ride in our 2010 Mondeo Titanium diesel estate is quite harsh for my wife who has a bad back. Could I improve the ride by fitting different size wheels and tyres and what tyres would you recommend for winter use? My current tyres are 235/45 R17.

205/55 R16 tyres are the deepest profile tyres you can fit to a Mondeo. For all year round use I recommend Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons tyres, but there is a lot of choice this size. You can get a set of four Alutec 16-inch alloy wheels from tyremen.co.uk for around £335. These wheels and a set of 205/55 R16 tyres might in total cost less than a new set of 235/45 R17s.
