What do you think of the Hyundai i30?

I am planning on buying a car for my partner and we were looking at 2008-2010 Hyundai i30 1.6 diesel with less than 40,000 miles. Any good and bad pointers or advice on this one? He will be mostly doing a 30 mile commute every day and occasional trips on weekends. But the most important criterion is overall reliability.

Very good. Anything that has gone wrong is in the entries in www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar. Engine is chain cam so no £500 timing belt to replace every four years. Up to about mid 2010 they did not have diesel particulate filters. DPFs are best avoided because they can go wrong if cars are driven short distances from cold and they fail anyway after 3 – 6 years, costing £800 to £1500 to replace. The i30 came with a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty. The equivalent KIA cee'ds came with a 7-year or 100,000 mile warranty.
