Would you recommend the Isuzu D-Max or the Ford Ranger for towing?

I am still looking for a 4wd pickup and have been impressed by the ‘Extra-cab’ versions of the Isuzu and Ford because they have a rear hinged doors into the space behind the front seats. I have driven both but the Ford example was a higher spec double cab so it is not directly comparable to the Isuzu ‘extra-cab’ with basic trim levels. Both of these vehicles had 6-speed manual gearboxes and similar power outputs.

The Isuzu has a slightly increased towing weight at 3500kg (Ford is 3350kg), which might be useful since I have a 2.7-ton digger that is right at the legal max when on a trailer. Towing at max weight will be very occasional and is not a primary concern. If you can offer any opinion on the relative merits of these two vehicles it would be much appreciated.

On the basis of past and current performance (I've bought two Thai D-Maxes, one badged as a Chevrolet Colorado) I'd go for the new D-Max. The new D-Max has a development of its previous, excellent 2.5-litre chain cam I-TEQ engine, now with twin turbos. I got 36mpg out of the old 4WD and 40mpg out of the old 2WD (though there are no 2WDs in the UK). The Ranger has either a 150PS 2.2 chain cam Transit engine or a 200PS 3.2 chain cam five-cylinder engine. The 2.2 is lower geared, but 'sweeter' and more lively. The 3.2 pulls a very tall 40mph per 1000rpm in sixth. Isuzu is well acquainted with the need for a tachograph in pick-ups used for towing for commercial purposes.
