Which wheels and tyres can I fit to my BMW 318i to improve the ride comfort and noise?

My May 2011 BMW 318i SE came on 17-inch wheels and 45 profile Bridgestone tyres. The ride is hard and the tyres noisy. What might I consider to improve things without affecting the stability of the car?

16-inch wheels with 205/55 R16 tyres. You can get a set of five TUV-approved 16-inch Alutec wheels from www.tyremen.co.uk for £335 inc VAT. For tyres, Toyo J48s or Proxes CF1s are good. Proxes CF2s may be better still but I have not tried them yet.
