Which SUV do you recommend?

I have a RAV4 T180 and hung on for the new RAV4, as my current car has been great, but I’m not keen on the replacement. I looked at most of the competition and think we might prefer an auto this time. We average 10,000 miles a year and think diesel more drivable in this class of car. We tend to do at least two 50-mile round trips each week. The Hyundai Santa Fe is too large, the Honda CR-V too car-like. The BMW X3 is too expensive, but great.

We've narrowed down to three we like. The Ford Kuga, but we're disappointed that some essentials such as reversing sensors are extra even on Titanium X trim. The Mazda CX-5 is well specified, but costly and with poor discounts. And the Freelander, which is a nice car, very capable and good to drive, but not the best use of space, is getting old and a replacement is due in two years. Which do you recommend. It must have some offroad capability.

The Freelander 2 has three significant problem areas: the autobox, steering rack and camshafts. I think your best bet is a Mazda CX-5 Skyactiv auto bought via www.drivethedeal.com. You should get 40 - 45mpg even from the auto. I'm getting 50 from a Mazda 6 2.2d Skyactiv auto. The CX-5 also has the best steering and handling of the bunch. But it's at its best on the 19-inch wheels with 225/55 R19 tyres. There is still enough profile in these for decent ride quality.
