What do you think caused our Citroen C5 to overheat?

Our Citroen C5 overheated and as a result our local garage (who had very recently carried out an oil change etc plus MOT at 50,000 miles) found that the head gasket had blown and the head was distorted. A specialist firm has skimmed and tested the head and the whole has been reassembled. Now on testing, the garage informs us that the fans are not working correctly and would have caused the original overheating. They say that hopefully there is a curable fault in the ECU and it’s off to another specialist firm today for advice. The garage has already indicated that the cost of the gasket repair, including new cam belt, new water pump etc will be in the region of £1800, and the cost of a new ECU is some £1500 plus fitting. As a couple of 82 year olds, your comments will be gratefully received.

The car does not require a computer to work the fans. Just a simple temp sensor/sender switch screwed into the block and wired to the fan motors. The sensor probably failed.
