The optimum hand position on the steering wheel blocks my view of My Mercedes-Benz ML's speedometer.

My driving instructor friends, some of whom are qualified for high-speed instruction, confirm that the optimum hand position on the steering wheel is between quarter to three and ten to two. In either of these positions I find my left hand covers the analogue speedometer of my Mercedes ML in the 20 to 50 mile an hour range, and my right hand covers the full beam warning light.

There is now a new model ML, but I can't tell you if this design deficiency still afflicts it. I personally don't pay any attention to "optimum hand position on the steering wheel". What is optimum and what is not depends on the vehicle and the driving conditions, not dogma. Though, of course, I do subscribe to the view that two hands on the wheel is usually better than one.
