How do electric cars keep occupants warm in winter?

We hear a lot these days about the merits, or otherwise, of electric cars. One question I've never heard answered is: how do the occupants keep warm in wintry conditions? If power from the batteries is used to warm the car, then presumably this reduces the mileage the car can travel before a recharge is needed. Your comments would be appreciated.

Absolutely correct. Using the heater in winter can reduce the range of the car by as much as 50 per cent. Similarly, using the a/c in summer can reduce the range by 25 per cent. However, the second generation Nissan Leaf has new technology that extends its range and reduces the drain of heater, a/c, lights, etc.
