Which petrol car offers good performance without big wheels?

I'm looking to change my 2007 BMW 120D SE (I have been really happy with this car) and would welcome your advice on possible replacements. My annual mileage of 7000 precludes a diesel with a DPF, but I would prefer a petrol car with a similar performance so I am looking for one with a sporty performance but not with big wheels and "sports" suspension. Does the new 118i BMW SE fit the bill or is the Golf 1.4 TSI a better bet?

The huge benefit of a BMW 1 Series is rear wheel drive and steering uncorrupted by driveshafts. But actually, a Golf VII 1.2TSI 105 SE does the job astonishingly well and is a very satisfying car to be in. I’d say that is now the class leader. However, a Honda Civic 1.8iES is more economical. I saw 47mpg over 650 miles in one; 4mpg better than I got from the Golf 1.2TSI 105.
