Should I return a hire car without having it checked by a rep?

I have just returned a hire car to a Spanish airport where there was nobody inspecting the cars for damage, etc. When I dropped off the keys I was told that "a mechanic would check it later", so, to avoid any chance of being charged for damage caused after I had left the car in a very vulnerable parking bay, I took photographs from all angles. Have other readers experienced this new procedure and had any unexpected bills after they had returned to the UK?

Yes. My advice is always to return early in plenty of time for your flight, take photos and fill in the damage sheet with the rep.
