Mazda CX-5 - petrol or diesel?

I'm considering buying a Mazda CX-5, which I’ll drive for 8000 miles per year. You say the diesels should not be subjected to short runs if at all possible, but what is a short run?

My pattern of motoring is a 1/2mile run to the paper shop then on to work a further two miles. The temperature gauge will have more or less hit normal. I may then need to take a further 10 mile run. At weekends I generally do a 65 mile run. Will this pattern of motoring be satisfactory for the DPF?

That use will choke a DPF. Possibly even on a CX5 Skyactiv D that has the best technology for avoiding DPF problems, but I think your type of use is too extreme even for that.

Either buy an older diesel that does not have a DPF, or get a car with a petrol engine.
