Buying a hot hatch for £8k - what would you recommend?

I want to buy a hot hatch for £8000 and have narrowed my search to a 2010 Peugeot 308 GT or a 2006 Volkswagen Golf GTi. Which would you buy?

The Peugeot 308 would be an interesting choice, but, Golf has the Volkswagen myth behind it that keeps values up. I have only driven a 308 1.6THP 150, but quite liked it: www.honestjohn.co.uk/road-tests/peugeot/peugeot-30.../
