Should I pay a parking ticket issued in a private shopping centre car park?

I parked on yellow lines at a shopping mall car park which offers free parking throughout, when I returned to my car I had a ticket stuck to my windscreen. The ticket looks official enough, but people are telling me to ignore it as the parking company has a reputation for bullying payment from the public for parking issues on private land that cannot be enforced by law. Do I need to pay and should I be worried about threats of court action?
