Renault Megane blow blue smoke and refusing to start - what's wrong?

Yesterday, on the motorway my Renault Megane started puffing blue smoke out of the exhaust. About a mile later the on-board computer appeared with the warning 'injector fault'. I pulled over onto the hard shoulder and noticed a lot of smoke and heat coming from the engine bay and the car would not start, and hasn't since. Any idea what’s happened?

Reads like the injector seal may have failed and poured a lot of neat diesel into your sump, contaminating the sump oil and possibly seizing the engine. However, if it will turn over on the starter motor, relax. it isn't seized.
