Which used car is best for the commute to work?

I'm getting rid of my (reliable but thirsty) Ford Mondeo and need something reliable for a commute to work which is nearly 30 miles each way, with frequent heavy traffic.

My budget is about £4000, but I'm worried about buying old diesels and spending loads of money on repairs. I have seen a 2007 Focus 1.6 Zetec with LPG conversion and 70,000 on the clock, would this be worth taking a look at?

LPG conversions can be dodgy and you might find the exhaust valves are burned out. You can't avoid diesel dual mass flywheels (unless the flywheel has been replaced with a solid one), but for £4000 you can avoid diesel particulate filters.

The Hoda Civic 2.2i CTDIs did not have DPFs, for example. Focus 1.6TDCI 110s did. VAG 1.9TDIs are generally a lot more reliable than VAG 2.0TDIs and most did not have DPFs.
