Overseas car insurance - which cover will I need?

We are soon to go to Spain on holiday and have bought a package, which includes car hire and insurance. I have heard of some scams being employed by foreign insurers and am worried I’ll get ripped off. Can you tell me which cover I need and what scams to avoid?

Take out the rental company's extra cover against damage. I recently did for 3 weeks in Bangkok and it cost me about £120 v/s a maximum charge of £400 if I damaged the car. Someone did damage it in a multi story carpark, so the extra cover paid off. My rental company (Avis) sent the car out full of fuel and wanted it back full, which is fair. A scam is to charge you for a full tank at an excessive rate (sometimes for more fuel than the tank will hold) whether you use it all or not.
