Can I remove the DPF from my car?

I have 2010 Ford Focus and am considering a DPF removal. The system itself hasn't given my any issues, but I am worried about future problems. Is this a good idea, or would it cause more problems than it could potentially solve?

Under the relevant EC Directive it is illegal to remove any component affecting the registered emissions of the car. This is not yet enforced in the UK by VOSA and is not part of the MoT, but could become so at any time.
