Should we buy a petrol or diesel?

We're interested in a new Kia Sportage KX-2 automatic and intend to keep the car for seven years, but can't decide between the diesel 2.0 and petrol 2.0 engines. We do roughly 6500 miles per year - mostly short runs with the occasional longer run. What would you recommend?

The petrol engine will be heavy on fuel with the automatic transmission. I can't guarantee that you won't have any DPF trouble with the diesel, but I have yet to hear of any on KIAs, so that may be the best option.
