Buying a car with the lowest running costs - which is best?

I need to buy a car with low running costs, but which is still comfortable for long journeys. I am also a little picky on style, but the running costs are my main priority.

I know the Toyota Aygo is great for mpg, but its too small and uncomfortable to be used frequently for long journeys. Any suggestions?

The crucial thing is the length of the driver's seat squab. A Mazda 2 is good. A FIAT 500 Pop or Lounge is even better (best on Pop is 14-inch wheels with 175/65 R14 tyres). I've done 600 miles in a day in one.
