Can you recommend an estate car to replace our Volkswagen Passat?

We are looking to replace our 2005 Volkswagen Passat 2.0-litre petrol estate. Could you recommend a replacement secondhand car that is less thirsty, less gutless, more comfortable, and more fun to drive? Realistically, we still need an estate but we also like 4x4s. Our budget is up to £18,000 plus the trade in on the Passat.

Mondeo 1.6 Ecoboost. I got well over 40mpg over around 1000 miles. If you want economy, forget 4x4s. Recentlly, Motorpoint had some 2012 registered Mondeo Ecoboosts for £13,999.
