Why are Bosch fuel pumps in the Fiat Scudo and the Suzuki XL7 prone to failure?

Did you know that a Fiat Scudo combi (van with seats) 2001, 2.0-litre TD and a Suzuki XL-7 2004, also 2.0-litre TD, both have two fuel pumps, one of which is located in the fuel tank? The Fiat has interchangeable parts with Peugeot and Citroen vans, and a lot of the Suzuki (including the engine, I was told) is Peugeot. At approx. 80,000 miles the fuel pump in the tank in our Scudo went. A very common fault, we were told. The Bosch pump disintegrates and at worst the filings can get through to the fuel filter and beyond. Cost of repair 2,000 Euros. It would have been much worse if the filings had advanced.

Our next car, the Suzuki, had exactly the same problem at 80,000 and again was a well known problem at Suzuki- cost of repair 750 Euros. Why on earth can Bosch not be told to get its act together by these companies and the unsuspecting owners be compensated? Why also, one has to wonder, is there such a discrepancy in costs and labour costs? Maybe it is like the fuel consumption discrepancy between the two Peugeot engines - a minimum of 10 mpg difference.

Many thanks for the information. Will note. In fact, almost every car has two fuel pumps. A fuel tank lifter pump and a pressurising pump for the fuel injection. Failure is quite common. I had two injection pumps and one fuel tank lifter pump fail on the same Volkswagen Mk II GTI (as well as a lot of other component failures). Fuel tank lifter pump failures are common across the Peugeot/Citroen range.

My reply is the inevitably disappointing one that these companies build parts down to a price that the manufacturers are prepared to pay and inevitably have to cut quality in order to be able to supply to that price. This is in the interests of both manufacturer and parts supplier because they both make very significant profits on the supply of replacement parts.
