Which estate car or MPV for a young family?

My wife and I are expecting our first baby in June and we are in the market for a new car. We also have a dog and have come to the conclusion that we need an estate for when we all go out together. We have £10,000 to spend and we're currently looking at an Audi or Volkswagen. It would be great to have some advice on estates in that price range.

For a baby, an MPV is better than an estate because it means less bending to lift the child in and out and hence less risk of a back injury (this advice comes from painful experience). So a Ford C-Max, Volkswagen Golf Plus, Toyota Verso, Renault Scenic, Mazda 5 or even a Volkswagen Touran is much better than an estate car.
