How can I repair my Mini Cooper cabriolet's hood?

My question is pretty basic and concerns my dear wife's 2004 BMW Mini Cooper cabriolet's hood. The car is low mileage, but the hood has been up and down very regularly and is showing quite significant scuff marks, particularly in the rear quarter areas. I have looked at other Mini cabriolets and it appears to be quite a common problem. Otherwise, the car is in immaculate condition. I am afraid of using any type of proprietary cleaner or weather proofer for fear of making the problem worse. Have you heard of this sort of problem before?

There always was a problem with Mini convertible hoods splitting where they fold. A company that makes and sells treatments for hoods is Renovo (www.renovointernational.com/) but there is a whole section of this directory devoted to convertible hoods: www.honestjohn.co.uk/useful-websites/parts-accesso.../
