Honda Civic auto not as efficient as we'd hope

I was always under the impression that new cars had better fuel consumption than older ones. I recently bought a new model (second hand) Honda Civic 1.8 ivtec ES auto having had the old model (same spec) for some 4 years. The old Honda returned 43 mpg but the new one only 36mpg (inline with your fuel consumption website). What is the reason for the poorer fuel consumption.

Is there anything my local Honda dealer can do to improve it?

I had 45mpg out of the 2006-2011 Civic 1.8iES, and 48mpg out of the current 1.8iES. But these were manuals. A torque converter auto is bound to affect fuel economy.
