Car for a family of three

I drive 13k miles per year mostly urban with frequent motorway trips (majority less than 40 miles), I've read all about the issues with diesel particulate filters as reported here but not the rest of the motoring press so I have recently run a Volkswagen Golf MKVI 1.4TSI and presently a Ford Focus 1.6 Ecoboost Titanium.

Its almost time to replace the Focus and I'm drawn to a Toyota Auris (Hybrid?), Honda Civic (although rear space seems an issue) or a VAG 1.2/1.4TSI (Seat Leon, VW Golf or Skoda Octavia) but as I had to offload the previous Golf because of issues with the TSI engine I am cautious of repeating this mistake.

What would you recommend? There are three in my family so I need a car of this segment size or larger - budget up to £20k doesn't have to be new.

A Civic is colossal inside. And the 1.8i engine in the latest Civic will do 48mpg on a long run (at least, it did for me). That makes it more economical than VAG 1.4 aND 1.2 TSIs.
