Replacing my very costly 407 - with what?

I currently do 35,000 per year in a Peugeot 407 SW, when it is working it is lovely but last year cost £3k to keep on the road, in the past I have always purchased French diesels for £6k, mainly Citroens, and run then into the ground.

However this policy has not worked with the 407, and I don't want to spend another £3k on a car that is now on 132,000 miles. I am looking now at spending £12k with 20k on the clock and selling the car while it has some value at say 90k.

I do like the toys on the 407 but wouldn't want another, I like the look of the Golfs but it's hard trying to get one for the price. Is there anything else I have missed, since I spend upwards of 40 days a year in the car what do you suggest?

You are obviously a Mondeo man, or you should be. But diesel cars in this class run for 35k a year have to be thought of as disposable. After 80k there will be significant and expensive failures such as DPFs, DMFs, EGRs, turbos and timing belts. When the value of the car sinks to less than £3,000, that's partly because of the repair bills that the trade anticipates. Makes no economic sense to spend £3k a year on a car worth £3k. But, worse, it makes no economic sense to spend £5k a year on depreciation.
